Signing Day Predictions...

Predictions
Some years, you know who is going to sign where on National Signing Day (the next national holiday?). Some years, you don't have a clue. This year, Auburn fans don't have a clue. There's been a lot of hand wringing the past few days over the what ifs. One moment, fans are optimistic and hopeful with visions of 5 stars; the next, the sky is falling and you begin to seek shelter from the inevitable doom. Auburn is currently sitting between 15 and 21 in the team rankings, but there are a few 5 stars and a number of 4 stars left on the board. Best case scenario? Auburn runs the table and fills the class ending up with a top 5 or better class. Worst case? Auburn gets shut out with the top prospects on the board and barely stays in the top 20.

The staff here at College and Magnolia isn't as pessimistic as some about how Auburn's coaches close with this recruiting class. In fact, there is some optimism.

We polled the staff along with a couple friends of the blog that are considered to be quite knowledgeable when it comes to recruiting.  Jordan Powell (@smuphy) and Kyle Kolumbus (@kolumka) were kind enough to give their predictions as well. There are 11 main targets left on AU's board, and due to his flirtation with UGA, JaQuay Williams is also on this list. The concensus on those is as follows:

Eddie Goldman - 50/50 split between Auburn and Florida State.
Leonard Williams - Auburn with the majority vote, although recent news has some leery of the pick.
Kwon Alexander -  LSU
Ronald Darby -  Auburn with the majority vote over FSU.
Jordan Moore - Auburn
Avery Young - Auburn with the majority.
Jordan Diamond -  Michigan with the majority.
Will Adams - Auburn
Cordarelle Patterson - Georgia with the majority pick.
Stefon Diggs - Split between Auburn and Florida. It may depend on who Nelson Agholor picks.
Ricardo Louis - Auburn
JaQuay Williams - Everyone feels confident Auburn hangs onto him.

It looks like a coin flip right now for Goldman, Williams and Diggs. If this holds up, then Auburn will sign the current 15 commitments, the All-American transfer Jay Prosch, and between seven and nine signing day decisions, only two of which are less than a 4 star prospect. That doesn't sound like doom and gloom to us. It's quite possible some of these are completely wrong. And we hope we are wrong on a couple of the ones predicted not to go our way. If you want to see the breakdown of everyone's predictions, check out the chart below.

Monday Lunchtime Recruiting Notes

Chiz_and_troop

-- 4-star offensive lineman Alex Kozan chose Iowa over Auburn late last night. Auburn made a good push but in the end, his favorite from the beginning won out.

-- In case you missed it, Arik Armstead chose Oregon over Auburn and Cal. Staying close to home was a big deal for Armstead, and that proved to be too much for Auburn to overcome.

-- The "quiet period" has started and no contact can be made betweens recruit and coaches between now and signing day.

-- Auburn got the last visit with Eddie Goldman's parents before the quiet period began, and his parents are very high on the Tiger coaches. Especially Coach Tommy Thigpen, who has been the lead recruiter on Goldman. We still think Florida State holds a slight edge, but Auburn is not far behind at all. Auburn has a done a great job recruiting Goldman and feels confident that it did a good enough job.

-- Will Adams, a Georgia Tech commit, is a 3-star offensive lineman out of Georgia. Adams visited Auburn this weekend with his teammate, JaQuay Williams. There were some reports out that Adams had flipped from Tech to Auburn, but that's not quite the case, yet. It seems he has opened up his recruitment, and that bodes well for the Tigers.

-- Speaking of JaQuay Williams, we think Georgia has done a decent job recruiting him as of late, but we think UGA got in on Williams too late and with Adams looking more and more like he will ink with Auburn, look for JaQuay to do the same.

-- Stefon Diggs took a visit to Ohio State over the weekend. The visit didn't get the rave reviews from Diggs like Auburn or Florida, but he does like Urban Meyer and enjoyed his visit. He will take a visit to Maryland next weekend and make his final choice on February 10. Maryland could be a dark horse after getting the last visit, but we still see this as an Auburn-Florida battle for the speedy wideout.

-- Not much has changed on the Kwon Alexander front, as it still seems to be an Auburn-LSU battle for the 4-star linebacker. Alabama has offered a grayshirt but it seems Kwon is not really interested in that route. Both the Auburn and LSU coaches feel confident about Alexander, so this one will come down to the wire.

***We will have a post up soon with all targets and commitments signing ceremonies dates and times.

***Also, we will be doing a live blog all day on National Signing Day. We will get started early and will run until the last fax has been received.

***Follow us on twitter @CollegeAndMag, and remember we're doing a free AU Bookstore gift card giveaway. We're already giving away one. If we get to 750 followers on Twitter before NSD we will do two, and at 1,000 we will do three.

Welcome to another exciting edition of Home on the Plains. There are only three chances to catch the Tigers on the plains this week so plan accordingly. War Eagle!

Monday, January 30th

Men's Tennis vs. North Carolina, Yarbrough Tennis Center, 12 PM

Wednesday, February 1st

Men's Basketball vs. Georgia, Auburn Arena, 7 PM

Come unwind from signing day at the Auburn Arena. This is an All Auburn, All Orange event and the first 3,000 fans in attendance will recieve Coke Zero t-shirts.  If you aren't one of the first 3,000 fans, just be one of the loudest and you could catch a shirt during the Kinnucan's t-shirt toss.  Coach Chizik and the football team will be presented with the Chick-fil-a Bowl trophy at halftime. Chick-fil-a will also be sponsoring a parachute drop during this game.

Thursday, February 2nd

Women's Basketball vs. Vanderbilt, Auburn Arena, 6 PM

It's daddy/daughter date night at the Auburn Arena which means father's can get 2-for-1 ticket deals for this game. Local charities will be in attendance collecting cellphones, eye glasses and books. If for some reason you left the arena without a t-shirt on Wednesday, there will be another Kinnucan's t-shirt toss. The Tiger Paws will perform a dazzling dance number at halftime and Chick-fil-a parachutes will once again rain down from the rafters.

The Recruiting Roller-Coaster

Rollercoaster
This weekend has been a prime example of the ups and downs of recruiting season.

The final Sunday before National Signing Day on Wednesday is usually an eventful one. A "quiet period" for recruiting began at midnight Saturday night. Meaning that face-to-face contact was only permitted on-campus. Sunday marked the final day before the "dead period" begins, meaning no more face-to-face contact between coaches and recruits. The final official visits are wrapped up, and un-committed recruits begin to narrow their choices. So, what kind of roller coaster did Auburn fans ride this weekend? There have been a few ups, downs, and even a couple of barrel rolls in the past few days ...

On Friday and Saturday, news began to trickle out that Georgia Tech offensive line commit Will Adams had decided to take a last minute official visit to Auburn. Adams is 6'7, 275, rated a 3-star by the recruiting services and just so happens to be the high school teammate of Auburn commit JaQuay Williams, who has worried Auburn fans the past week with his flirtation with Georgia. JaQuay made the trip to Auburn with Adams and by all reports, both had a good trip. Both elected not to give interviews on Sunday as they left. Will Adams switch his commitment to Auburn? A report on GT's Scout site stated that Adams had indeed switched his pledge. However, it has not been confirmed by Adams or anyone close to him. Did Auburn's coaching staff firm up the commitment of JaQuay? Williams tweeted that he will announce between Auburn and Georgia on February 1.

Top prospect Arik Armstead was scheduled to make his announcement Sunday afternoon. Auburn was a finalist and reports on Saturday indicated he had narrowed his list to three, including AU. Armstead is from California and in the end, the desire to stay on the West Coast was too much. Armstead committed to Oregon.

A report on Florida's Rivals site late Sunday afternoon stated that Leonard Williams had narrowed his list down to Florida and Southern Cal. Williams is a highly recruited defensive line prospect that had long been considered an Auburn lean. The elimination of Auburn from consideration came as a surprise to everyone who follows recruiting. Attempts to contact Leonard by representatives from Auburn's various recruiting sites were unsuccessful. However, they did speak to his coach who called the report "inaccurate" and that he still considered Auburn to be Williams' leader. The Florida site that made the initial report later posted a story quoting Williams via a Facebook chat the seemed to back up their initial claims. However, no one else has spoken with Williams to confirm the report. So, does Auburn still have a shot? If the Tigers were eliminated suddenly, what happened? We may not know until Wednesday.

Alex Kozan, an offensive line recruit out of Colorado, was thought to be announcing his choice on Sunday between Auburn, Iowa, and Michigan. As of 10 pm Sunday night, that decision had not been made. There were a few tweets late Sunday night from fans of Michigan and Iowa that Kozan had chosen Auburn, but no confirmation or reports from credible sources. Then, shortly before midnight it was reported by several recruiting sites that Kozan had made Iowa his choice.

The next couple of days leading up to signing day are likely to be much the same. There will be some reports of good news and some with bad news. Take it all with a grain of salt and remember that nothing is final until the ink is dry. Wednesday is likely to be another roller coaster ride, so buckle up and hold on. It's going to be a wild couple of days.

A few thoughts on Saturday afternoon...

Good afternoon, everyone. Don't forget to check out our AU/UT basketball preview before the game today at 5pm. The men are looking to get their first road win since going to Hawaii and after losing two heartbreakers on the road against LSU and Arkansas, respectively.

Thank you to all of our followers. We have had a great first week and we plan to keep improving the site and the content. A few thoughts...

- People are quick to criticize when attendance at sporting events are low. We need to also be quick to applaud when attendance is outstanding. The atmosphere at Auburn arena was phenomenal. It may have had something to do with the opponent but it was a great sight to see. Our gymnastics team has gone from seemingly non existent a few years ago to standing toe to toe with the defending national champions. Hopefully they can beat Florida at home in a couple of weeks.

- I like to follow a few of the beat writers from around the SEC to get a feel for what is happening around the league. I have seen a few posts lately about AU being only a football school. They are certainly entitled to their opinion, but the Auburn athletic program's accomplishments over the last couple of years say otherwise. Since the spring of 2010, AU athletics has accomplished the following: 2010 SEC West baseball champions and hosted a regional, 2010 SEC West soccer champions, men's swimming extended their consecutive SEC championships to 15, everyone knows what happened in the 2010 football season, mens golf started the season ranked #1 in the country, and soccer won the SEC tournament in 2011. I would argue that we have had a successful last couple of years overall and not just in football.

- Baseball is starting soon. They started officially practicing yesterday. Like the last couple of years, our pitching will have to improve if we expect to compete for an SEC title. According to our own @AUPPL, AU has the tenth toughest schedule in the country. The SEC is arguably a better baseball conference than a football conference.

- National signing day is coming up and as we have documented here, it could be a great day on Wednesday or a "meh" day. We are in the top three for several top recruits and their decisions will make or break this class.

Have a great Saturday and War Eagle!

Auburn at Tennessee Preview

Auburn_tennessee

Auburn (12-8, 2-4) faces yet another road test in Knoxville on Saturday after a disappointing finish in their last game. The Tigers were looking for their first SEC road win but were unable to tie the game at the buzzer, falling to Arkansas 56-53 Tuesday night. Senior Kenny Gabriel put up 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Chris Denson and junior Frankie Sullivan each had 10 points. Auburn continued to outrebound its competition, 44-29, and despite a 7 point lead with 13 minutes left in the game, the pressure from the Razorbacks proved to be too much. Having junior Varez Ward and sophomore Josh Langford for less than a full half did not help matters. Both are expected to play Saturday.

Tennessee (9-11, 1-4) is also looking to pick up a win at home after a 65-47 loss in Nashville to Vanderbilt. Even with the debut of the orange blazer on Coach Cuonzo Martin, the Volunteers only managed to hit 1 of 7 three pointers. Junior Jeronne Maymon has his 12th double double for the season but only put up 10 points (the only double digit UT scorer in the game). The 47 points were a season low for the Vols. Vandy took the lead early and never let up.

Tennessee Scouting Report

Tennessee is a very similair team to the Tigers. They play good defense and struggle to score with the ball at times. They lack a true center and have two-forward, three-guard lineup that is very physical and swarms to the ball on defense.

Freshman Jarnell Stokes is a load inside at 6'8 250, and Trae Golden has played very well for the Vols leading the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg, leading the SEC in assists with 5 per game.Senior gaurd Cameron Tatum has been through the good and bad at Tennessee and has always been a solid player for the Vols.

Tennessee will shoot alot of threes, with over a third of their FG attempts coming from behind the arc. Tennessee is traditionally very good at Thompson-Boiling Arena, and picked up a win over no. 13 UConn last Tuesday, 60-57. The Vols' lone league win came at home as well, beating Florida 67-56.

Tennessee will run a ball control offense and work for a good shot. Look for the Vols to start looking to Stokes more often and playing some inside out with him. They will try to get Stokes going early and hope to force the Tigers to double him, opening up some room for their three point shooters. On defense, the Vols won't press much but they do play very well on defense and rebound well. Stokes has made a real difference for this team on both sides of the ball, and Auburn will have to try and contain him inside and on the boards.

Key Stats

Tennessee has a slight lead in scoring (57.4) over Auburn (55.2). Both teams struggle to score at times, so it will be key for Auburn to take full advantage of each possession. The pace will favor niether team, as both teams like to work the ball in the half court for a good shot.

Scoring defense also slightly favors the Vols (61.0) over Auburn (62.3). Both teams will run a man defense, but you may see some zone from Tennessee since Auburn lacks a pure shooter outside of Frankie Sullivan. If the Vols do decide to zone Auburn, the Tigers need to take advantage and knock down some shots. When the Vols are in man, the Tigers need to execute their flex-style to get good shots and get in the paint.

Rebounding favors Auburn (37.3) over Tennessee (36.2). Both teams rebound very well and both are outrebounding their opponets by and average of 2 rpg. If Tennessee does go zone, the Tigers need to crash the offensive boards very hard. It is harder to rebound out of a zone since you're not assigned to one man. Auburn will need to run towards the glass before the Vols can put a body on them. Any extra oppurtunities to score in this game will come at a premium.

In terms of turnovers, Auburn (15.7) is turning it over two fewer times than Tennessee (17.4). Both teams are forcing 13.8 per game. Forcing turnovers will be a huge factor in this game, as they usually are in every game. Auburn needs to turn Tennessee turnovers into points, while limiting their own turnovers, especially on the road.

This game will come down to who can take advantage of possessions and who can protect the ball more. Both teams will struggle to score and both teams will rebound well. Getting anything easy will come at a premium and have a big factor on the outcome of the game.
